Spring/Summer 2011

Okay, the weather has already run its course and we are all counting down the days until we can wear a summer dress and attempt bare legs. So what have our fantastic fashion designers come up with for next season. The colour to look out for is Tangerine. Theres no need to buy head to toe tangerine, (unless you want to) you can simply have minimal amount mixing with black or have it included in a print. There was a great combination of coral and fuchsia on the catwalk just what you need for a cheering up! Christopher Kane displayed fantasic neon colours in his S/S 2011 collection where again just a neon accessory will add a bit of fun to your outfit. A newcomer to Topshop, Mary Katrantzou showcased amazing textile digital print dresses for Spring/Summer and Givenchy was just one of all designers who included the summer white into their collections. The carryover from Autumn/Winter is skirt length. A/W saw skirts lengthen as far as you liked with some designers and retailers producing skirts which you could amend yourself to shorten!(Hobbs) Next season is all about length in the skirt, from mid-calf to floor length it seems that mini's are out according to Vogue. Spring/Summer 2011 seems to be full of colour and flattering shapes for all sizes. A very successful season is approaching!

Scottish Fashion Awards 2010

June the 20th saw the 5th annual Scottish fashion Awards take place. It was held at Glasgow's Science Centre where a tartan carpet opposed to the red carpet brought the stars and designers together. Among the stars was Paulo Nautino, who won Scottish Style Icon of the Year.

Jonathan Saunders was the talk of the night, taking home the Scottish Fashion Designer of the Year award. He was up against fellow designers such as well known Christopher Kane and Graeme Black.

Holly Fulton, who was featured in Vogue UK earlier this year won Scottish Young Designer of the Year. Graeme Armour, who also appeared in Vogue this year was in the catergory.

The Scottish Accessory Designer of the Year award went to William Chambers and gorgeous Lisa Omond took away the award for Scottish Model of the Year.

Peter Jensen, Rodarte and Markus Lupfer were all nominated for International Designer of the Year. For use of Tartan fabric in his creative designs, Markus won the award.

Cruise accepted the award for Scottish Retailer of the year where Jett Sweeney will be feeling extremely proud to walk away with the Scottish Graduate of the Year award.

In the past we have seen Dame Vivienne, Basso and Brooke and many other successful designers start from this award ceremony and progress around the world. It is exciting to think who is going to be next to break through and show that Scotland have the designers that will succeed in the fashion world.

Autumn/Winter 2010

There was a vast mix of trendsetters on the catwalk this season.

Orange was a huge contribution to London’s Fashion Week, however started to fade in Paris with only dashes of the colour seen. Wear orange knitted dresses with a mix of dark navy shoes, or if you don’t feel brave enough try toning it down with mustard.

Top to toe knits were seen by Chloe, Chanel and Prada. You can achieve the expensive simplistic chic look by adding a narrow belt to break up the knits.

Navy was showcased everywhere and you can wear this with everything. Try keeping the navy as dark as possible like Karl Lagerfeld and Bottega Veneta.

Texture is a very important aspect this season. Fur (fake or real), Feathers (if you are not one for fur), knits and crochet where all displayed. This was seeing in Paul Smith, Chanel, Alexander McQueen, John Galliano and Marios Schwab collections. The one that stood out the most was Marios Schwab’s Teddy Bear Fur.

The must have garment for this season has got to be the camel trench coat. Camel was seeing top to toe by Chloe and in moderation by Alexander Wang. Wear this with camel wide trousers, a vest top and some neutral heels.

Jil Sander and Chloe introduced the understated collections. Fantastic great quality designs but gentle in colour and shape. It is a new way to show off the material and quality in which the garment has been made.

Off course this season wasn’t going to hide away from the fact that we are practically guaranteed a cold winter. With this the trend of yeti came ahead. There was Zig Zag fur and tweeds with decorative snow boots ranging from Lanvin to Topshop Unique. Chanel took it one step further by having a glacier set stage.

This season colours where mixed in a new and exciting way. Try warmly autumn shades with petrol blue and navy (the darker the better) with a flash of orange or leopard print.

Adding to these trends, return hairstyles braved the catwalk. Chanel saw the return of the beehive with an added accessory of a statement headband. Karl Lagerfeld and Giles broke out the retro hair trends which worked well with understated pieces and grunge glamour looks.

Finally there were some familiar trends taking the catwalk such as, lace which was seen in Erdem, Valentino and Dolce and Gabbana. Futuristic prints and dart manipulation were seen in Balenciaga and Mui Mui and statement jewellery shown in Sass and Bide and Yves Saint Laurent.

Spring/Summer 2010

This season we saw 4 main trends walking down the catwalk. There was a lot of contrasting going on from heavy military chic by CHLOE to soft pretty pastels by CHRISTOPHER KANE and from delicate white by JILL SANDER to cyber printing by ALEXANDER MCQUEEN.

For Utility (millitary) you saw khaki, shorts, double denim, beautiful workwear boots and the classic white shirt.

For Pretty you saw frills, luxurious lace, socks with shoes (this is going to be huge!), powder-puff pastels, velvets and raw tailoring which looks fantastic.

For White you saw romantic fragile garments, laayering, ruffles, off course the classic white shirt and hairbows which we saw with CHANEL's revolution of the grey striped hair.

For Cyber you saw metamorphic prints, ergonomic cuts, ikat print, scribbled crayon (colour), statement bold necklaces which have continued on from A/W 2009 and computer generated snakeskin by ALEXANDER MCQUEEN.
